Capturing “My Self, the Fetus”,
a Durational Performance by Lisette Ros

I had the privilege of photographing a very special performance by Lisette Ros, one that explored themes I often find myself drawn to: what shapes our sense of who we are? And how do other people’s perceptions influence who we become?

As we stood watching the artist lying in a fetal position, her body shimmered under a layer of liquid material that covered her from head to toe.

Otherworldly and extremely vulnerable were the words running through my mind. Over several hours, the material transformed, first liquid, then hardening into a shell, and finally cracking apart.

Lisette Ros’s work explores how society, (queer) identity, and the human experience intersect and influence one another. She uses her own body as a medium to question everyday norms and reveal the invisible patterns that shape how we live. In “My Self, the Fetus”, she gives a visual form to the gradual fading of the self as society’s expectations take over. At the end, Lisette peels away the “skin,” leaving behind a residue, a symbolic trace of what remains after that transformation.
